After sufficient clinical evidence of benefit, these new products may be considered as the best treatment plan based on each patient’s individual needs. Dr. Kenneth Neufeld offers specialized, non-surgical aesthetics procedures that help restore or enhance facial aesthetics and beauty, including:

BOTOX®
Frown lines, deep wrinkles, drooping eyelids, even underarm sweating – these can be treated with Botox®. If the condition is the result of the underlying muscles causing surface wrinkles or lines, Botox® is an excellent treatment that can provide very satisfying results. Thomas Eye Group is always looking for new treatment options. In addition to Botox®, alternatives such as Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau are available to patients.
How Does BOTOX® Work?
Botox®, Botulinum type A, is an injectable anti-aging treatment to block the nerve impulses that control the movement of our facial muscles. Repetitive or habitual movements of these muscles – like frowning, pursing lips, squinting and so on – are responsible for creating the expression lines on the face. These tiny muscles operate automatically, below your conscious control, often due to habit patterns. By ‘turning off’ the actions of these muscles, Botox® can reduce or eliminate the surface effects.
For example, frown lines across the forehead and clefts are often due to squinting or raising of the brows in a habitual pattern. Botox® can put these overworked muscles at rest and the disfiguring surface effect is eliminated.
It is important to have a physician trained in the specific anatomy of the muscles and skin area around the eyes to avoid complications that may result from the medication gaining access to the wrong muscle group. Dr. Neufeld has significant training in the structures in this area as an oculoplastic specialist.
Is BOTOX® Safe?
Botox® has been used medically (as opposed to cosmetically) for more than 30 years for the treatment of nerve disorders, muscular spasms, and even migraines, using much higher doses than those used for cosmetic purposes. Some side effects have been noted such as a mild headache following treatment and mild flu-like symptoms – but these are extremely rare. Botox® has a better safety record than Aspirin.
Generally speaking, the Botox® procedure is safe for most people. However, only your doctor can decide if a Botox® injection is safe and right for you. Before starting treatment, your doctor will need a thorough medical history, including such things as any diseases that affect your nerves and muscles, whether you’re breastfeeding or plan to become pregnant, what medically prescribed or self-prescribed medications and herbals you currently take, etc.
How Long Does it Last?
Most patients find that Botox® lasts approximately 3-4 months. It has been seen that after several repeated injections, the interval between injections gets longer. Some patients only require Botox® injections once or twice per year.
What Results Can I Expect?
Generally, a smoother more rested and healthier appearance is the result one can expect. Botox® can smooth away clefts, lines, and wrinkles and restore a more youthful and rested appearance. The person applying Botox® should have a complete understanding of facial anatomy, the muscles involved, how they function, and how they affect your wrinkles. In other words – seek out an experienced medical professional. Additionally, the amount of Botox® injected will impact your results. Each individual will need specific treatment according to his or her unique physical characteristics. In some cases, Botox® is combined with other cosmetic treatments such as dermal fillers and laser skin resurfacing.
Remember, Botox® ‘turns off’ the unwanted muscular functions beneath the skin, but these may have already resulted in permanent lines or wrinkles on the skin surface, and these can also be treated with other cosmetic technologies.
How Long Before I Can See Results?
Botox® results can often be seen after several days, but the full effect is generally noticed after one week. Women usually see the results sooner than men. A man with thicker skin and stronger muscles may take up to 10 days. There is no limit to the number of times that you can have Botox®.

Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers are body-friendly substances such as collagen and hyaluronic acid, found naturally in the tissues of the body, which are injected into skin areas to restore volume and suppleness. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance between the skin cells that holds moisture and provides fullness. Skin that looks wrinkled or dry from over-exposure to sunlight is largely due to the fact that the cells have ceased making Hyaluronic acid. Aging also affects the production of Hyaluronic acid. Unlike collagen fillers, hyaluronic acid fillers do not require an allergy test before they are injected and rarely cause an allergic reaction.
The dermal fillers hand-selected by Dr. Neufeld are as follows:
- Restylane®
- Juvederm®
Each patient and area of the face is unique and would benefit more from one particular product than another. The best product will be determined after an initial evaluation with Dr. Neufeld. Additionally, there is medication that can be used to manipulate the chosen product once it is in place to thin, dissolve or remodel if needed.
Juvederm®
Juvederm® is an FDA-approved, injectable filler used to treat facial lines and other skin imperfections. The Juvederm® treatment performed by Dr. Neufeld can be used to enhance the lips, or treat facial wrinkles or facial features like the chin and cheeks. This dermal filler like the other one we use (Restylane®) is made up of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance, and it comes in the form of a crystal-clear gel.
How Juvederm® Works
The active ingredient in Juvederm® dermal filler, hyaluronic acid, is a naturally occurring, biodegradable complex sugar found in the human body and in all living organisms. Among other things, hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin and adds volume, contributing to the overall appearance of the skin.
The ability of cells to produce hyaluronic acid diminishes with age, often resulting in the formation of facial wrinkles and folds as the skin loses volume.
Juvederm® is administered in small doses by intradermal injection directly into facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds (the folds running from the sides of the bottom of the nose to the outer corners of the mouth), temporarily filling and augmenting the treated area.
After Your Juvederm® Treatment
Many people are worried about recovery after dermal filler injections. You may be happy to know that the recovery period after a Juvederm® procedure is minimal. There may be possible side effects like redness, swelling and discomfort at the injection site which tend to subside within several days. Occasionally, a bruise may be present which may take several days to resolve.
How Long Can You Expect These Results to Last?
The results of Juvederm® last about six to nine months depending on the location. Thomas Eye Group has dedicated a complete section of our medical practice for medical aesthetic treatments. Restylane®
Restylane® can be used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth. If you are just starting your research on cosmetic dermal fillers, please feel free to review all the website pages of this section. Large or deep wrinkles, creases, folds, loss of youthful contours, hollows, acne scars – these can be treated with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers can also be effective for lip enhancement and chin shaping and generally restore the effects of aging.
